Digging Deeper: Hebrews 1:7

God has created a world and a universe with order and purpose. The universe has incredible order. Think of the order in the universe: We can describe elements in an ordered equation. For instance, water is comprised of two parts hydrogen, and one part oxygen. God designed gravity so we don’t float off the ground and are not squashed like bugs. That takes incredible order and design.

The universe has order, and angels are part of God’s created order. We know angels exist because they consistently appear in Scripture. God uses them to bring forth his redemptive plan for humans, and Jesus testifies to their existence.

Angels serve according to God’s will and were made for his purpose. We see this in Hebrews 1:7, where it says,

"And about the angels he says: He makes his angels winds, and his servants a fiery flame." Hebrews 1:7

The essential teaching in Hebrews 1:7 is that God created beings, like angels, to do his will. Angels are servants and messengers of God. Angels serve God’s purpose and are most effective when they operate according to God’s design. As soon as they step out of the design that God created them for, all hell breaks loose. They become fallen angels, who we know as demons. God makes another ordered place for them, a place the Bible calls hell.

What happens to fallen angels is a teaching for us as well. Humans serve God’s purpose and are most effective when they operate according to God’s design. As soon as a human being steps out of the design that God created them for, all hell breaks loose. Every time a human sins, they are stepping out of God’s design for them.

Understanding God’s design in your life is why Jesus is the most critical person to know and understand. Misunderstanding Jesus can topple generations and cultures.

  • Muslims misunderstand Jesus because they make him into a prophet and nothing else.
  • Jews misunderstand Jesus because they don’t see him as the Messiah.
  • Other religions and cults misunderstand Jesus because they treat him as either a created, angelic being or they treat him as nothing more than a good teacher.

The message in Hebrews 1 is this: Don’t misunderstand who Jesus is. Jesus is above all creation. He is greater than creation because, as Hebrews 1:2 says, God “made the universe through him.” When Jesus came into the world, he was and is the Creator in human flesh. The Bible starts in Genesis 1:1, saying, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." This verse describes a creation that came through Jesus Christ.

When you don’t understand who Jesus is, you will never understand the one who created you. You can never live according to God's design without putting your faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

It never works whenever you put something above Jesus Christ in your life. Why is that? Because God designed you to put the Son of God first and foremost in your life. Without Jesus Christ as first, nothing else works.

The Bible says that the angels worship Jesus, and all the heavenly beings worship him. If all the heavens worship him, how much more should we? Is Jesus Christ first in your life?
